Sus antecedentes:

  • Investigaciones previas vincularon un mayor ángulo de fase (PhA) con una mejor función cognitiva en adultos mayores con deterioro cognitivo.
  • La relación longitudinal entre los cambios en el PhA y el deterioro cognitivo seguía sin estar clara.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Investigar los cambios en el PhA a lo largo del tiempo en relación con el deterioro cognitivo en adultos mayores.
  • Comparar estos cambios entre individuos con enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA) y deterioro cognitivo leve (MCI).

Principales métodos:

  • Se reclutaron 240 adultos mayores con deterioro cognitivo para dos años consecutivos de evaluaciones.
  • Se midió la función cognitiva mediante el Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) y parámetros físicos, incluido el PhA.
  • Se emplearon modelos lineales mixtos para analizar los cambios y comparar los grupos de EA y MCI.

Principales resultados:

  • Se observaron descensos significativos en las puntuaciones del MMSE, la masa muscular y el PhA durante un año (p < 0.05).
  • Las medidas antropométricas como el IMC y el porcentaje de grasa se mantuvieron estables.
  • Si bien los participantes con EA tuvieron un MMSE basal más bajo, su tasa de descenso no fue significativamente diferente de la de los participantes con MCI (p = 0.061).

Conclusiones:

  • Los adultos mayores en riesgo de deterioro cognitivo experimentaron disminuciones en el MMSE, la masa muscular y el PhA durante un año.
  • El monitoreo del PhA, junto con las evaluaciones cognitivas, puede ayudar en la detección temprana del deterioro cognitivo.
  • Los hallazgos sugieren que el PhA es un biomarcador relevante para monitorear la salud cognitiva en poblaciones de envejecimiento.
