Sus antecedentes:
- El síndrome de Fahr es un trastorno neurodegenerativo raro caracterizado por calcificaciones cerebrales bilaterales, principalmente en los ganglios basales.
- Estas calcificaciones son el resultado de alteraciones en la homeostasis del calcio y el fosfato, lo que provoca síntomas neurológicos, neurocognitivos y psiquiátricos.
Objetivo del estudio:
- Para describir tres casos raros de síndrome de Fahr que presentan calcificaciones cerebrales bilaterales pronunciadas.
- Para enfatizar la importancia del seguimiento a largo plazo y la intervención temprana en pacientes de alto riesgo.
Principales métodos:
- Estudio de caso de tres pacientes ingresados por crisis epilépticas por primera vez.
- Las pruebas de laboratorio revelaron una hipocalcemia significativa.
- La tomografía computarizada cerebral confirmó calcificaciones cerebrales bilaterales.
Principales resultados:
- Los tres pacientes presentaron crisis epilépticas debidas a hipocalcemia y calcificaciones cerebrales.
- Tras la sustitución de calcio y el tratamiento anticonvulsivo, los pacientes se recuperaron hasta alcanzar su estado previo a la hospitalización y se encontraban libres de crisis al momento del alta.
Conclusiones:
- El síndrome de Fahr requiere un seguimiento vigilante a largo plazo mediante pruebas bioquímicas y neuroimágenes.
- El diagnóstico y tratamiento tempranos, que incluyen la sustitución farmacéutica y nutricional, pueden prevenir complicaciones neurológicas y psiquiátricas graves en personas de alto riesgo.
