Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) protects anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria from perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) toxicity. DNRA bacteria showed higher PFOA tolerance, while increased extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) indicated a defense response in anammox-AnMBRs.
