Abstract:
To investigate the chemical constituents of the whole plant of Pachysandra terminalis, silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, and semi-preparative high-performance liquid chromatography were used for separation and purification. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on spectroscopic data(NMR, MS), electronic circular dichroism(ECD) data, and physicochemical properties. Nine compounds were isolated and identified from the ethanol extract of the whole plant of P. terminalis, namely pactermol B(1), loliolide(2), pubinernoid A(3), phillygenin(4), epipinoresinol(5), pinoresinol(6), salicifoliol(7), ferulic acid(8), and trans-ferulic acid methyl ester(9). Among them, compound 1 is a new cyclohexene derivative, and compounds 2-5 and 7-9 were isolated from the genus Pachysandra for the first time. The antitumor activities of the isolated compounds were evaluated using the CCK-8 assay. The results showed that all compounds showed no significant cytotoxicity against A549, H460, and HepG2 cell lines.

Stability of Substituted Cyclohexanes
The two chair conformations of cyclohexanes undergo rapid interconversion at room temperature. Both forms have identical energies and stabilities, each comprising equal amounts of the equilibrium mixture. Replacing a hydrogen atom with a functional group makes the two conformations energetically non-equivalent.
For example, in...
