Parvovirus B19 encephalitis in adults: a case report from Vietnam

Resumen
Parvovirus B19 infection can cause severe encephalitis in healthy adults, a rare but serious complication. Prompt diagnosis via PCR and supportive care led to a full recovery in this case.

- El Parvovirus B19 causa típicamente eritema infeccioso en niños.; Aunque es raro en adultos, el Parvovirus B19 puede provocar graves complicaciones neurológicas como la encefalitis.; La encefalitis en adultos a menudo tiene etiologías diversas, lo que requiere amplios diagnósticos diferenciales.
Objetivo del estudio:
- Presentar un caso de encefalitis inducida por Parvovirus B19 en un adulto previamente sano.; Destacar el potencial del Parvovirus B19 como causa de encefalitis en adultos.; Enfatizar la importancia de considerar el Parvovirus B19 en casos de encefalitis inexplicables.
Principales métodos:
- Presentación de un caso clínico de un hombre de 50 años con síntomas de encefalitis.; Estudio diagnóstico que incluye punción lumbar, RM, EEG y PCR multiplex en líquido cefalorraquídeo.; Exclusión de causas infecciosas e inflamatorias comunes de encefalitis.
Principales resultados:
- El análisis del líquido cefalorraquídeo mostró leucocitosis leve con proteína y glucosa normales.; La resonancia magnética cerebral reveló lesiones características del cuerpo calloso.; La PCR multiplex confirmó Parvovirus B19 en el líquido cefalorraquídeo.; El paciente se recuperó completamente con cuidados intensivos de soporte y antibióticos empíricos.
Conclusiones:
- El Parvovirus B19 debe considerarse en el diagnóstico diferencial de la encefalitis en adultos sanos.; La detección temprana mediante PCR es crucial para un manejo adecuado.; Este caso subraya la posible gravedad de la infección por Parvovirus B19 más allá de su presentación típica.
