Abstract:
The limited solubility and bioavailability of Naringenin (Nar) require the development of efficient delivery systems. Herein, Naringenin-loaded foxtail millet prolamin nanoparticles (Nar-FP NPs) were synthesized via antisolvent precipitation and surface-modified with hyaluronic acid (HA) to form Nar-FP-HA NPs. Under optimized FP:Nar ratio (5:1, w/w) and HA concentration (2 mg/mL), the nanoparticles displayed minimal particle size (177.40 ± 0.87 nm) and high zeta-potential (-26.37 ± 1.01 mV). The formation of Nar-FP-HA NPs was primarily driven by electrostatic attractions, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions. These nanoparticles achieved high encapsulation efficiency (96.80%) and maintained excellent physical stability under various environmental conditions. Compared to free Nar, Nar-FP-HA NPs displayed enhanced antioxidant activity and remarkably increased bioaccessibility. Furthermore, in vitro release studies confirmed controlled release of Nar under simulated gastrointestinal tract conditions. This study developed an efficient FP-HA-based system for Nar delivery, offering novel strategies for applications in the food and nutritional industries.
