Los recuentos más altos de neutrófilos y monocitos se relacionan con una menor variabilidad de la frecuencia cardíaca (VFC), un indicador de disfunción autonómica cardíaca. Sus antecedentes:

  • La variabilidad de la frecuencia cardíaca (VFC) indica la función del sistema nervioso autónomo cardíaco.
  • Las células inmunitarias, en particular los leucocitos, están implicadas en la reducción de la VFC.
  • El papel específico de los leucocitos y su asociación entre sexos y estados del metabolismo de la glucosa sigue sin estar claro.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Investigar la asociación transversal entre los recuentos de leucocitos y los índices de VFC.
  • Examinar si el sexo o el estado del metabolismo de la glucosa modifican la relación entre los leucocitos y la VFC.

Principales métodos:

  • Se utilizaron datos de 1888 participantes del Estudio de Maastricht.
  • Se midieron subconjuntos de leucocitos (neutrófilos, monocitos, linfocitos, etc.) mediante hematología automatizada y citometría de flujo.
  • Se evaluó la VFC mediante ECG de 24 horas, calculando puntuaciones en el dominio del tiempo y del dominio de la frecuencia.

Principales resultados:

  • Los recuentos elevados de neutrófilos y monocitos se asociaron significativamente con puntuaciones más bajas de VFC en el dominio del tiempo y del dominio de la frecuencia.
  • Estas asociaciones se mantuvieron significativas después de ajustar por múltiples covariables.
  • No se observó una modificación significativa del efecto por sexo o estado del metabolismo de la glucosa.

Conclusiones:

  • Los niveles elevados de neutrófilos y monocitos se correlacionan con una disminución de la VFC en la población general.
  • Estos hallazgos resaltan la posible participación de procesos inmunitarios innatos e inflamación en la disfunción autonómica cardíaca.
  • La asociación observada es independiente del sexo y del estado del metabolismo de la glucosa.
