Resumen

La expansión maxilar rápida mejoró significativamente la capacidad de discriminación de olores en niños. Si bien la identificación de olores mostró un ligero aumento, no fue estadísticamente significativo, lo que sugiere que la expansión del paladar puede mejorar la función olfativa.

Sus antecedentes:

  • La expansión del paladar es un tratamiento de ortodoncia común en niños.
  • La sensibilidad olfativa puede verse afectada por los cambios en las vías respiratorias nasales.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Evaluar los cambios en la sensibilidad olfativa en niños sometidos a expansión del paladar.
  • Evaluar el impacto de la expansión maxilar rápida en la identificación y discriminación de olores.

Principales métodos:

  • Se sometieron 20 niños (0-14 años) con discrepancia interarcada transversal posterior a expansión maxilar rápida.
  • La función olfativa se evaluó utilizando Sniffin' Sticks antes y después del tratamiento.
  • Se utilizaron evaluaciones de otorrinolaringología y cuestionarios para la evaluación subjetiva y objetiva.

Principales resultados:

  • Las puntuaciones de discriminación de olores aumentaron significativamente en 3,41 puntos (p < 0,001).
  • Las puntuaciones de identificación de olores mostraron un aumento no significativo de 1,28 puntos (p = 0,064).

Conclusiones:

  • La expansión maxilar rápida puede mejorar la función olfativa en niños.
  • Las dimensiones mejoradas de las vías respiratorias nasales y el flujo de aire son mecanismos potenciales.
  • Se necesita más investigación para confirmar estos hallazgos.
