Los niveles de hemoglobina fetal (HbF) disminuyeron de manera similar tanto en lactantes prematuros pequeños para la edad gestacional (PEG) como en los de edad gestacional adecuada (EGA). Las transfusiones de glóbulos rojos no afectaron la HbF en los lactantes PEG, pero la redujeron en los lactantes EGA, posiblemente debido a la hipoxia fetal.
