Sus antecedentes:

  • La restauración de ecosistemas es crucial para mitigar el cambio climático y la pérdida de biodiversidad.
  • Evaluar la efectividad de la restauración a gran escala es un desafío debido a las limitaciones de monitoreo.
  • La ecoacústica ofrece un enfoque novedoso para evaluar la recuperación de la biodiversidad.

Objetivo del estudio:

  • Evaluar los impactos en la biodiversidad de la restauración forestal a gran escala en Costa Rica.
  • Comparar la recuperación acústica en bosques en regeneración natural frente a plantaciones de monocultivo.
  • Evaluar la eficacia del programa de Pago por Servicios Ecosistémicos (PSA).

Principales métodos:

  • Se utilizó un conjunto de datos ecoacústicos de 119 ubicaciones en Costa Rica.
  • Se analizaron los patrones del paisaje sonoro en pastos degradados, sitios restaurados del PSA y bosques de referencia.
  • Se cuantificó la similitud acústica con los bosques de referencia para diferentes tipos de restauración.

Principales resultados:

  • Los sitios restaurados del PSA exhibieron patrones acústicos muy similares a los bosques maduros de referencia.
  • Los bosques en regeneración natural mostraron una mayor recuperación acústica (similitud 1,4x) que las plantaciones de monocultivo (similitud 1,24x).
  • Los pastos degradados mostraron características de paisaje sonoro significativamente alteradas en comparación con los bosques de referencia.

Conclusiones:

  • La restauración forestal a gran escala, particularmente la regeneración natural, es efectiva para recuperar la biodiversidad.
  • La ecoacústica proporciona un método escalable para monitorear el éxito de la restauración.
  • El programa PSA de Costa Rica demuestra una recuperación ecológica exitosa a gran escala.
