Resumen
Los flavivirus, virus de ARN de preocupación para la salud mundial, no se detectaron en 151 cetáceos brasileños. Esto sugiere una circulación limitada de flavivirus conocidos en estos mamíferos marinos, que pueden ser huéspedes accidentales.

- Se encuestó a 151 cetáceos de 22 especies de biomas marinos y de la cuenca del Amazonas en Brasil.
- Se recogió y se extrajo ARN de 589 muestras, incluyendo cerebro, bazo, pulmón, riñón, ganglio linfático, hígado, glándula suprarrenal y suero.
- Utilizó PCR en tiempo real de amplio alcance dirigido al género Orthoflavivirus para la detección de flavivirus.
Principales resultados:
- Todos los individuos de cetáceos encuestados dieron negativo para el ARN del flavivirus.
- El intervalo de confianza del 95% para la detección de ARN de flavivirus fue de 0-1.96%.
- No se identificó ARN de flavivirus en ninguna de las muestras de tejido o suero analizadas.
Conclusiones:
- Los hallazgos sugieren una circulación limitada o la ausencia de flavivirus conocidos en las poblaciones de cetáceos silvestres estudiadas.
- Los cetáceos pueden actuar como huéspedes incidentales para los flavivirus, en lugar de desempeñar un papel significativo en sus ciclos de transmisión.
- Se recomienda una mayor investigación para aclarar completamente la epidemiología del género Orthoflavivirus en cetáceos.
