Objetivo del estudio:

  • Determinar la asociación entre el asma y los cambios en la estructura cortical del cerebro utilizando un enfoque de aleatorización mendeliana de dos muestras.
  • Aprovechar los datos genéticos y de neuroimagen a gran escala para un análisis robusto.

Principales métodos:

  • Utilizó los datos de los estudios de asociación de todo el genoma (GWAS) del Biobanco del Reino Unido para el asma (N=408,442).
  • Polimorfismos de un solo nucleótido seleccionados (SNPs) como variables instrumentales.
  • Se analizaron los datos de espesor cortical y superficie del Consorcio ENIGMA (N=51,665).
  • Empleado inverso-varianza ponderada (IVW) como el método principal, con MR-Egger y mediana ponderada para los análisis de sensibilidad.

Principales resultados:

  • No se encontró una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre el asma y el área de superficie cortical global o el grosor.
  • Se observaron asociaciones nominales para el área de superficie del giro parahipocampal y el grosor de la corteza cingulada anterior caudal.
  • Estas asociaciones específicas de la región no fueron significativas después de corregir por comparaciones múltiples.

Conclusiones:

  • El estudio no encontró una asociación significativa entre el asma y las métricas corticales globales.
  • Los hallazgos exploratorios en regiones cerebrales específicas requieren una mayor investigación.
  • Se necesita más investigación para comprender las posibles alteraciones neuroanatómicas en el asma.
