Abstract:
This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a game-based mobile application in improving midwifery students' knowledge and skills in postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) management. The study was conducted using a 2-phase randomized controlled design. In phase 1, a PPH management knowledge test was developed and validated with 90 third-year midwifery students in Central Anatolia, including item analysis using the Test Analysis Program (TAP 6; Assessment Systems Corporation). In phase 2, 82 students from a university in the Central Black Sea region were randomly assigned to intervention (n = 42) and control (n = 40) groups. Both groups received standard instruction through presentations and demonstrations, while the intervention group, in addition, used the mobile application for 1 week as a supplemental learning tool. Data were collected using the validated knowledge test, a procedure checklist, and an application evaluation form. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 23.0 (IBM Corp.) with a significance level of P < .05. The intervention group demonstrated significant improvements in both knowledge (pre: 14.62 ± 2.10; post: 15.19 ± 2.23) and skills (pre: 21.43 ± 2.81; post: 22.64 ± 2.24). Student feedback highlighted the application's ease of use, clarity, and educational benefit. These results support incorporating game-based mobile tools into midwifery education to enhance clinical competencies in PPH management, particularly in resource-limited settings.
