先進国で高齢者に多く見られる石灰化僧帽弁狭窄症は、主に僧帽弁輪石灰化によって発生し、人口の高齢化に伴いその有病率は上昇している。あらゆる年齢層で見られる僧帽弁閉鎖不全症は、主に、正常な弁機能に必要な僧帽弁装置または左心室の構成要素の一つ以上の解剖学的または機能的な障害によって発生し、心不全患者の増加に伴いその有病率は上昇している。本レビューでは、僧帽弁疾患の診断および治療選択肢（薬物療法、外科的治療、経カテーテル治療）について、特に高齢者における関連した課題を含めて論じる。
