A tuberculosis (TB) cluster in Bergen involved young adults with identical Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. This outbreak, identified by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis, was the largest of its kind in Norway.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology
  • Epidemiology

Context:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) surveillance in Norway.
  • Haukeland University Hospital reported 30 TB cases in 1996.
  • 63% of cases were confirmed as Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis).

Purpose:

  • To compare clinical, bacteriological, and treatment data of a TB cluster with other pulmonary TB patients.
  • To investigate the transmission dynamics within the identified cluster.
  • To analyze the significance of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) in TB outbreak investigations.

Summary:

  • A cluster of 13 TB patients (8 adults, 5 children) with identical M. tuberculosis RFLP patterns was identified.
  • Cluster patients were young adults with no prior chest X-ray abnormalities, unlike older controls.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The cluster demonstrated active M. tuberculosis spread and new infections with the same bacterial strain.
  • Impact:

    • This study identified the largest TB cluster with an identical RFLP pattern in Norway since 1993.
    • Highlights the utility of molecular typing (RFLP) in tracking TB transmission.
    • Provides insights into TB epidemiology among young adults in Bergen.
