    Summary

Radionuclide imaging using Tc99m assessed liver function in patients with benign volumetric liver growths (BVGL). Larger and deeper growths significantly impair hepatocyte function, but decompressive surgery improves it.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatobiliary Medicine
    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Surgical Oncology

    Background:

    • Benign volumetric liver growths (BVGL) can affect hepatocyte function.
    • Assessing liver function is crucial for managing BVGL patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate hepatocyte functional status in patients with BVGL.
    • To correlate BVGL characteristics with liver function.
    • To assess the impact of decompressive surgery on liver function.

    Main Methods:

    • Radionuclide investigation using Tc99m.
    • Evaluation of Tmax, T1/2, and T bowel parameters.
    • Clinical examination of 67 patients (51 BVGL, 16 control) pre- and post-surgery.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Significant correlation found between BVGL size/location and hepatocyte function.
    • Liver function decline was more pronounced in BVGL > 5 cm (Tmax 78.3%, T1/2 95.7%) compared to < 5 cm (Tmax 33.3%, T1/2 50%).
    • Decompressive surgery significantly improved hepatocyte function.

    Conclusions:

    • BVGL size and depth inversely correlate with hepatocyte function.
    • A differential surgical approach for BVGL is warranted based on tumor size and location.
    • Surgical intervention effectively restores liver function in BVGL patients.
