Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Virology
  • Pediatric Medicine

Context:

  • Burkitt's lymphoma is an aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
  • Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is implicated in various lymphoid malignancies.
  • Nasopharyngeal involvement is a less common presentation of Burkitt's lymphoma.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the association between Burkitt's lymphoma and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
  • To analyze the clinical, histological, and virological features of primary nasopharyngeal Burkitt's lymphoma in children.

Summary:

  • Two pediatric cases of primary nasopharyngeal Burkitt's lymphoma were studied.
  • Immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and double labeling confirmed EBV presence in 60%-95% of tumor cells, identified as B cells.
  • Clinical presentations included nasal obstruction and dyspnea.
