Summary

Buffered lidocaine did not offer a faster or more effective nerve block for neonatal circumcision compared to plain lidocaine. Pain management and complications were similar between the two anesthetic groups in this study.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of buffered lidocaine versus plain lidocaine for neonatal dorsal penile nerve blocks.
  • To assess the speed and effectiveness of anesthesia in a short timeframe.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized trial involving 194 newborn males undergoing circumcision.
  • Infants received either plain lidocaine or buffered lidocaine via dorsal penile nerve block.
  • Objective (heart rate, oxygen saturation) and subjective (behavioral state, crying) measures were recorded.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in heart rates or oxygen saturation were observed between the groups.
