Summary

Bilharziasis, a parasitic infection, can lead to bladder cancer, particularly squamous cell carcinoma, in endemic regions. Early diagnosis and treatment of acute schistosomiasis are crucial to prevent chronic lesions and aggressive bladder cancer.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Oncology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Bilharziasis (schistosomiasis) is a parasitic disease prevalent in Africa and the Middle East.
  • While uncommon, a link exists between bilharziasis and bladder cancer.
  • Recurrent hematuria in endemic areas suggests potential schistosomiasis.

Observation:

  • A 40-year-old male from Senegal presented with chronic bladder schistosomiasis.
  • The patient also had an infiltrative epidermoid carcinoma of the bladder.

Findings:

  • Untreated acute schistosomiasis can progress to chronic bladder lesions.
  • These chronic lesions may develop into squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder.
  • The patient underwent palliative cystectomy for advanced bladder cancer.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis and treatment of acute schistosomiasis are vital in endemic areas.
  • Prompt intervention can prevent the development of chronic bladder lesions and subsequent cancer.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering schistosomiasis in patients with hematuria and bladder cancer in endemic regions.
