Background:

  • A six-year-old male cocker spaniel presented with a three-week history of generalized weakness and myalgia.
  • Initial diagnostic evaluations including electrodiagnostics, CSF analysis, and myelography were unremarkable.
  • Muscle biopsies showed numerous large lipid droplets within type 1 and type 2 muscle fibers.

Findings:

  • Resting plasma lactate was mildly increased.
  • Elevated urinary excretion of lactic, pyruvic, and acetoacetic acids was observed.
  • Increased urinary excretion of carnitine esters and elevated plasma alanine were noted.

Implications:

  • The observed metabolic profile suggests a potential defect in oxidative metabolism.
  • This case highlights a possible new metabolic myopathy in dogs.
  • Further research is needed to define the specific enzymatic or genetic basis of this condition.
