Summary

Involuntary sneezing (i.s.) after local anesthetic injection is not linked to photic sneezing (p.s.). I.s. is more common with periocular injections, affecting both sexes equally.

Background:

  • Intravenous sedation for local anesthetic injection can cause complications like involuntary sneezing (i.s.).
  • Photic sneezing (p.s.) is a known reflex, but its association with i.s. is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence of involuntary sneezing (i.s.) following local anesthetic eye injections.
  • To determine if a history of photic sneezing (p.s.) predicts the occurrence of i.s.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 557 patients undergoing eye surgery with intravenous thiopentone and local anesthesia.
  • Patients were assessed for photic sneezing (p.s.) history and observed for involuntary sneezing (i.s.) post-injection.

Main Results:

  • Involuntary sneezing (i.s.) occurred in 5.2% of patients; 14% reported a history of photic sneezing (p.s.).
  • No significant relationship was found between photic sneezing (p.s.) and involuntary sneezing (i.s.) (p = 0.43).
  • Involuntary sneezing (i.s.) was significantly more frequent after periocular injections (23.8%) compared to retrobulbar injections (4.5%) (P < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Photic sneezing (p.s.) does not predict involuntary sneezing (i.s.) after local anesthetic eye injections.
  • Involuntary sneezing (i.s.) risk is similar for males and females.
  • Periocular injections are associated with a higher incidence of involuntary sneezing (i.s.) compared to retrobulbar injections.
