New device gives mobility to monitoring equipment

A new type of patient monitor can turn any bed into a monitored bed without special wiring. The Escort-Link wireless bedside monitor uses radio frequencies instead of cables to transmit information to a central viewing station. The monitor is now being used in emergency departments, step-down units and operating rooms in about 30 hospitals. If wireless networks prove practical, radio transmissions may become increasingly common in hospitals.
