Black hospitals' fortunes, ranks still declining

A 1990 story in Modern Healthcare identified only eight traditional black hospitals, a group that once numbered more than 200. Now, only a couple of those appear to be in reasonably good health. The facilities' heavy dependence on increasingly unreliable Medicaid as a payer is making it harder for them to survive, executives at those hospitals say.
