Abstract:
The introduction of a new technology, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, into an HMO is discussed. Anticipated savings in hospital costs associated with the procedure's short length of stay were offset by higher costs related to performing the procedure. Expensive, disposable equipment necessary to perform the procedure and the hospital charges for this equipment offset the potential savings of shortened hospital stays. A higher cholecystectomy procedure rate was also observed after laparoscopic cholecystectomy was introduced. A prospective agreement with the hospital regarding charges for this procedure might have resulted in less expense for the procedure.
