Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Adenosine is an endogenous purine nucleoside.
  • It is approved for intravenous treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.
  • Adenosine has a very short serum half-life (10 seconds).

Observation:

  • Common side effects include transient facial flushing, dyspnea, and chest pressure.
  • An elderly woman experienced a prolonged anaphylactoid reaction after adenosine administration.
  • This reaction necessitated pharmacological intervention.

Findings:

  • This report details the first case of a prolonged anaphylactoid reaction to adenosine.
  • The reaction observed was significantly longer than typical transient side effects.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should be aware of the potential for prolonged anaphylactoid reactions to adenosine.
  • This case underscores the importance of monitoring patients for rare adverse events.
  • Further research may be warranted to understand the mechanisms behind prolonged reactions.
