Anaphylactoid reaction to adenosine.

Summary

Adenosine, used for paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, can rarely cause prolonged anaphylactoid reactions. This case highlights a rare but serious adverse event associated with this common cardiac drug.

Background:

Adenosine is an endogenous purine nucleoside.
It is approved for intravenous treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.
Adenosine has a very short serum half-life (10 seconds).

Observation:

Common side effects include transient facial flushing, dyspnea, and chest pressure.
An elderly woman experienced a prolonged anaphylactoid reaction after adenosine administration.
This reaction necessitated pharmacological intervention.

Findings:

This report details the first case of a prolonged anaphylactoid reaction to adenosine.
The reaction observed was significantly longer than typical transient side effects.

Implications:

Clinicians should be aware of the potential for prolonged anaphylactoid reactions to adenosine.
This case underscores the importance of monitoring patients for rare adverse events.
Further research may be warranted to understand the mechanisms behind prolonged reactions.
