Background:

Managed care significantly impacts healthcare delivery and physician practice.
Physician understanding of managed care contracts' legal and ethical dimensions is crucial for patient advocacy and quality of care.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess physicians' knowledge and perceptions of managed care contracts.
To evaluate physician beliefs regarding the legality and ethics of specific contract provisions.
To understand physician views on managed care's impact on the quality of patient care.

Main Methods:

A questionnaire survey was distributed to 315 physicians at Norwalk Hospital, Connecticut.
Physicians were asked about their understanding of managed care contract provisions' legality and ethics.
Response rate was 20.9% (66 physicians).

Main Results:

A majority of physicians incorrectly believed 7 out of 11 contract provisions were illegal.
Physicians widely perceived contract provisions, especially nondisclosure clauses, as unethical (53%-95.4%).
97% of physicians believed managed care interferes with quality of care, with 72.7% advocating for industry legal responsibility.

Conclusions:

Physicians demonstrate a significant lack of understanding regarding the legal aspects of managed care contracts.
There is a strong physician consensus that many managed care contract provisions are unethical and detrimental to patient interests.
Physicians believe managed care negatively influences medical practice, necessitating legal interventions to uphold patient care quality.
