Alternative treatments of cancer: trends over time and implications for the future
1ADA Associates, Cincinnati, OH 45242, USA. aposto19@worldnet.att.net
Abstract:
There has been increasing utilization of alternative treatments for cancer, affected primarily by the dissatisfaction of the public with the outcomes of conventional treatments. Mortality rates from cancer have been increasing over time while spending by government on conventional cancer research rose. The lack of clinical trials on alternative therapies has left them open to criticism by mainstream medicine. Pharmaceutical companies have not funded trials because of an anticipated negative result to their profits. The government also has not shown much interest in research on alternative treatments although large expenditures on conventional treatments have not produced successful results. There is substantial evidence to support effectiveness of alternative therapies, based primarily on retrospective studies and case studies. Recently, clinical trials have been initiated with government approval, for a few alternative therapies; and such government involvement would improve the information available on treatments, to the benefit of the public.
Insights
Public dissatisfaction with conventional cancer treatments fuels interest in alternative therapies. Despite limited trials, evidence suggests effectiveness, prompting recent government-approved studies to improve patient information.

- Integrative Medicine
- Public Health
Background:
- Growing public dissatisfaction with conventional cancer treatment outcomes.
- Increasing cancer mortality rates despite rising government spending on conventional research.
- Limited clinical trials and mainstream criticism of alternative cancer therapies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To address the lack of clinical trials for alternative cancer therapies.
- To investigate the effectiveness of alternative treatments.
- To improve public access to information on diverse cancer treatment options.
Main Methods:
- Review of retrospective studies and case studies on alternative therapies.
- Initiation of government-approved clinical trials for select alternative treatments.
- Analysis of public health data regarding cancer mortality and treatment utilization.
Main Results:
- Substantial evidence supporting the effectiveness of alternative therapies from existing studies.
- Pharmaceutical companies' reluctance to fund trials due to profit concerns.
- Government's limited interest in alternative treatment research despite conventional treatment limitations.
Conclusions:
- Government approval of clinical trials for alternative therapies is a positive step.
- Increased research and data on alternative treatments can benefit the public.
- Addressing public dissatisfaction requires exploring and validating diverse therapeutic approaches.

However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy.
