Conjunctival lymphoma can mimic chronic conjunctivitis. Biopsy is recommended for persistent inflammation unresponsive to treatment, aiding early diagnosis of this rare eye condition.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Malignant conjunctival lesions can present insidiously, mimicking chronic inflammatory conditions.
  • Early diagnosis is crucial for effective management of conjunctival malignancies.

Observation:

  • Two cases of bilateral conjunctival lymphoma are presented, initially exhibiting symptoms consistent with chronic conjunctivitis.
  • Neither patient had clinically apparent subconjunctival nodules, complicating initial diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MALT type) in one patient and follicle center lymphoma in the other.
  • Both patients achieved complete remission following radiation therapy, with no recurrence observed during follow-up periods of 20 and 16 months.

Implications:

  • Conjunctival lymphoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of refractory chronic conjunctivitis.
  • Persistent conjunctivitis unresponsive to medical therapy warrants a diagnostic conjunctival biopsy.
