Summary

Mach bands, illusory visual effects, may arise from real-world luminance gradients, not just neural inhibition. This study finds natural photometric highlights and lowlights on curved surfaces mimic these perceptual phenomena.

Area of Science:

  • Visual perception
  • Neuroscience
  • Computational vision

Background:

  • Mach bands are illusory brightness variations at luminance gradient edges.
  • They are typically explained by lateral inhibition in early visual processing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate an alternative explanation for Mach bands.
  • To explore if real-world luminance gradients can generate Mach band perception.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of natural sources of luminance gradients.
  • Examination of photometric properties of curved surfaces in natural scenes.

Main Results:

  • Real-world luminance gradients, particularly from curved surfaces, often feature photometric highlights and lowlights.

Related Experiment Videos

  • These natural features spatially correspond to the locations of illusory Mach bands.
  • Conclusions:

    • The physical properties of natural luminance gradients offer a plausible explanation for Mach bands.
    • Perception of Mach bands may be an interpretation of environmental optical phenomena rather than solely neural processing.
