Summary
This study provides the first stroke epidemiology data in Vietnam, revealing a prevalence of 6.08 per 1,000 inhabitants. Arterial hypertension was identified as the primary stroke risk factor.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Strokes represent a significant health concern globally and in Vietnam.
- No prior epidemiological surveys on stroke had been conducted in Vietnam.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct the first epidemiological survey of strokes in Vietnam.
- To determine stroke prevalence, incidence, and mortality rates.
- To identify key risk factors for stroke in the Vietnamese population.
Main Methods:
- A door-to-door survey was conducted in three southern Vietnamese regions (Ho Chi Minh City, Tiên Giang, Kiên Giang) from 1994-1995.
- Trained interviewers used WHO diagnostic criteria for stroke.
- Neurologists reviewed interview results and examined detected stroke patients.
Main Results:
- Age-adjusted stroke prevalence was 6.08 per 1,000 inhabitants, increasing with age.
- Age-adjusted stroke mortality and incidence were 1.31 and 2.5 per 1,000 inhabitants, respectively.
- Arterial hypertension was identified as the most significant risk factor for stroke.
Conclusions:
- This survey provides crucial baseline epidemiological data for strokes in Vietnam.
- Arterial hypertension is a critical target for stroke prevention strategies in Vietnam.
- Further research with detailed death certificates is recommended for more precise mortality data.
