Summary

The advanced breast biopsy instrumentation (ABBI) procedure is less effective than core needle biopsy for diagnosing breast lesions. ABBI offered no advantages for benign or malignant findings and often failed to completely excise cancerous tumors.

  • 45 benign results (fibroadenoma, cysts, etc.) with average specimen size 4.8 cm.
  • 7 malignancies diagnosed; 6 had involved margins, indicating incomplete excision.
  • One non-diagnostic biopsy for dermal calcifications; one atypia requiring reexcision for intraductal carcinoma.
  • Conclusions:

    • ABBI is more invasive and less available than core needle biopsy for benign lesions.
    • ABBI completely excised only one of seven malignant lesions.
    • ABBI offered no advantages over core needle biopsy for benign or malignant breast lesions.
