    Background:

    • Legionellosis outbreaks are linked to contaminated cooling towers, which release aerosols.
    • Wet-type heat rejection units (WTHRUs) are common sources of Legionella pneumophila.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To inventory, inspect, and sample WTHRUs in Vermont for Legionella pneumophila.
    • To identify factors associated with Legionella pneumophila contamination in cooling towers.

    Main Methods:

    • Surveyed 184 WTHRUs in Vermont from April 1981 to April 1982.
    • Collected water samples from 130 WTHRUs for Legionella pneumophila analysis.
    • Analyzed data on water sources, operational periods, pH, and turbidity.

    Main Results:

    • 8.5% (11 of 130) of sampled WTHRUs tested positive for Legionella pneumophila.
    • Groundwater sources (15.8%) and year-round operation (15%) were associated with higher contamination rates.
    • Higher cooling water pH (mean 8.3) and lower turbidity (mean 0.03 ntu) correlated with positive L. pneumophila results.

    Conclusions:

    • Cooling tower water characteristics and operational factors influence Legionella pneumophila presence.
    • Findings highlight potential risks for Legionellosis outbreaks associated with specific cooling tower conditions.
