A skeptical economist views the road ahead in medicine

Efforts at the containment of escalating costs in the American health care system have met with only limited success. The structure of the provider system, both hospital and physician, and the expectations by the population of the wonders that the system can produce both argue against significant cost reductions. Increased outlays are mandated by an increasing Medicare population. However, some efforts by the administration may be successful in moderating costs.
