Summary

Latanoprost eye drops may trigger herpes simplex keratitis recurrence in susceptible patients. Discontinuation of latanoprost can resolve the condition, suggesting a link between prostaglandins and herpes simplex keratitis.

Research in veterinary science·2007

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Virology

Background:

  • Herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) is a common cause of corneal blindness.
  • Latanoprost is a prostaglandin analog widely used to treat glaucoma.

Observation:

  • Three cases of HSK developing after initiating latanoprost therapy are presented.
  • Recurrence of HSK was observed upon latanoprost reintroduction in one patient.

Findings:

  • Latanoprost treatment was associated with HSK recurrence in patients with a history of the condition.
  • Discontinuation of latanoprost led to HSK resolution, while its reintroduction caused recurrence, even with antiviral prophylaxis.

Implications:

  • Prostaglandins, potentially mediated by latanoprost, may stimulate HSK recurrence.

  • Clinicians should consider the potential association between latanoprost and HSK when managing patients with a history of herpetic eye disease.
