Ocular surface malignancies can mimic chronic conjunctivitis, presenting diagnostic challenges. Early biopsy is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment of these rare cancers.

Background:

  • Ocular surface malignancies can present with non-specific signs, mimicking chronic inflammatory conditions like blepharoconjunctivitis.
  • Delayed diagnosis of these rare tumors can lead to significant morbidity.

Observation:

  • This study reviewed six patients with persistent ocular inflammation.
  • Patients underwent conjunctival biopsy after failing conservative medical management.

Findings:

  • Histopathology revealed various malignancies including intraepithelial squamous neoplasia, invasive squamous cell carcinoma, sebaceous carcinoma, and conjunctival lymphoma.
  • These diverse cancers presented insidiously, resembling chronic conjunctivitis.

Implications:

  • Ocular surface tumors, though uncommon, require a high index of suspicion for accurate diagnosis.
