Renal transplantation path saves $34K per patient
Insights
Implementing a renal transplantation clinical pathway reduced patient hospital stays from 12 to nine days. This initiative significantly improved patient care continuity and generated substantial cost savings for the hospital.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Surgical Innovation
- Healthcare Management
Background:
- Renal transplantation requires complex, multidisciplinary care.
- Resident physician turnover can disrupt patient care continuity.
- Standardized protocols are essential for managing complex surgical pathways.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of a clinical pathway on renal transplant patient outcomes.
- To assess the effectiveness of standardized order sheets in improving care continuity.
- To quantify the financial benefits of implementing a clinical pathway for renal transplantation.
Main Methods:
- Development and implementation of a renal transplantation clinical pathway at a major academic medical center.
- Inclusion of standardized order sheets and patient progress overview documents.
- Analysis of patient length of stay and cost savings before and after pathway implementation.
Main Results:
- Reduced average length of stay for renal transplant patients from 12 days to nine days.
- Achieved an average cost saving of $33,636 per patient.
- Projected annual savings exceeding $4.2 million based on patient volume.
Conclusions:
- A standardized renal transplantation clinical pathway significantly improves efficiency and reduces healthcare costs.
- Standardized order sheets are crucial for maintaining care continuity in complex surgical procedures.
- Clinical pathways offer a viable strategy for optimizing resource utilization in transplant surgery.
Abstract:
A renal transplantation clinical pathway used at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia has cut length of stay from 12 days to nine and resulted in an overall savings of $33,636 per patient. Given the hospital's average annual volume of 125 renal transplant patients, that's a savings of more than $4.2 million per year. Team members attribute much of the success of the pathway to standardized order sheets. Because the care of renal transplant patients is complicated and residents change every month, it was important to maintain documents that allowed for continuity of care. The pathway includes a sheet that provides an overview of the patient's progress during the acute care stay. The overview allows those unfamiliar with the pathway to understand what is happening with the patient.
