Summary
This study reports a rare case of a supratentorial paraganglioma in the anterior cranial fossa. Surgical resection was successful, highlighting a potential origin from ectopic paraganglionic cells.
Area of Science:
- Neuro-oncology
- Surgical Pathology
Background:
- Supratentorial paragangliomas are exceptionally rare intracranial tumors.
- This case presents a unique instance of a paraganglioma in the left anterior cranial fossa.
Observation:
- A 56-year-old female presented with persistent headache.
- Imaging revealed a medial, solid, enhanced tumor with a cystic component at the left frontal base and sphenoid ridge.
- Angiography showed a hypervascular tumor primarily supplied by the left middle meningeal artery.
Findings:
- Preoperative diagnosis was meningioma, but histological examination confirmed paraganglioma with the characteristic 'Zellballen' pattern.
- The tumor was completely resected via a left frontotemporal craniotomy.
- This adds to the limited reported cases of supratentorial paraganglioma, particularly those not in the parasellar region.
Implications:
- This case expands the known locations for supratentorial paragangliomas.
- It suggests a possible origin from aberrant paraganglionic cells along the middle meningeal artery.
- Highlights the importance of histological confirmation for rare intracranial tumors.
