Early surgical intervention for dense persistent pupillary membranes (PPM) and cataracts significantly improves vision in infants. This case highlights successful treatment for reduced visual acuity.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Persistent pupillary membranes (PPM) are common congenital anomalies, present in 95% of neonates.
  • Extensive PPM occluding the visual axis, leading to reduced visual acuity, are rare.

Observation:

  • A 4-year-old boy presented with decreased visual acuity in his left eye.
  • Examination revealed a dense, extensive PPM associated with anterior polar cataract.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the PPM, lens aspiration, posterior capsulorhexis, anterior vitrectomy, and intraocular lens implantation were performed.
  • Post-operatively, visual acuity improved to 0.25 within 8 weeks.

Implications:

  • Early surgical treatment is crucial for dense PPM with polar cataracts.
