Carepartners frequently reported hospital care problems, especially concerning emotional support and discharge planning. Addressing these issues can improve family involvement and satisfaction for both patients and carepartners.
Area of Science:
- Healthcare Quality
- Patient and Caregiver Experience
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Carepartners significantly influence patient care during and after hospitalization.
- Limited understanding exists regarding carepartners' hospital experience assessment and influencing factors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate carepartners' perceptions of their hospital experience.
- To identify factors predicting carepartner-reported problems during hospitalization.
Main Methods:
- A national telephone survey of 1,800 patients and their carepartners.
- Analysis of carepartner responses across six domains of hospital care.
- Multivariable regression to identify predictors of carepartner-reported issues.
Main Results:
- Carepartners most often reported problems in emotional support (23.9%), discharge planning (20.3%), and family participation (17.6%).
- Predictors included poor patient health, emergency or nonsurgical admission, lower carepartner income, younger carepartner age, and less doctor/carepartner involvement.
Conclusions:
- Increased awareness of carepartner challenges is crucial.
- Improving quality in identified problem areas can enhance family engagement and satisfaction for patients and carepartners.
