Summary

Recurrent mandibular dislocation, a rare condition, can be treated surgically. Both the Leclerc blocking procedure and eminectomy showed good results, though some recurrences were noted after the Leclerc procedure.

Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Orthodontics
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Recurrent mandibular dislocation is an uncommon disorder.
  • It is often associated with neurologic diseases, temporomandibular joint disorders, or neuroleptic treatment.
  • Surgical interventions are frequently employed to manage this condition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of the Leclerc blocking procedure and eminectomy for treating recurrent mandibular dislocation.
  • To evaluate surgical outcomes and recurrence rates for these two procedures.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 23 patients (38 joints) treated between 1990 and 1997.
  • Procedures included the Leclerc blocking procedure and eminectomy.
  • Surgical outcomes and recurrence rates were assessed.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Both the Leclerc blocking procedure and eminectomy yielded good treatment results.
  • Recurrence of mandibular dislocation was observed in some cases following the Leclerc blocking procedure.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical treatment for recurrent mandibular dislocation can be effective.
  • The Leclerc blocking procedure and eminectomy are viable options, but recurrence is a possibility, particularly with the Leclerc technique.
