Summary

A rare retroperitoneal schwannoma recurred after surgery. Complete surgical excision is crucial for preventing recurrence of this benign tumor, despite its concerning appearance.

Background:

Observation:

  • A 68-year-old woman presented with a retroperitoneal cellular schwannoma.
  • The tumor recurred 16 months following initial surgical resection.

Findings:

  • Immunohistochemical staining for S-100 protein confirmed the diagnosis.
  • Despite a benign classification, the tumor's pseudosarcomatous histology can be misleading.
  • Incomplete surgical resection was associated with tumor recurrence.

Implications:

  • Complete surgical excision is the recommended treatment for retroperitoneal schwannomas.
