Summary

Complex polyphenols and tannins from wine (WCPT) did not affect colon cancer development in rats. Studies showed no impact on cell proliferation, apoptosis, or aberrant crypt foci, indicating WCPT is not a chemopreventive agent for colon cancer.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of WCPT on colon carcinogenesis parameters in a rat model.
  • To determine if WCPT influences cell proliferation, apoptosis, or aberrant crypt foci formation.

Main Methods:

  • F344 rats were fed WCPT at 14 or 57 mg/kg/d for 90 days.
  • Measurements included colon mucosa cell proliferation, apoptosis, fecal bile acids, and aberrant crypt foci (ACF) after carcinogen administration.
  • Nuclear aberrations were assessed after exposure to specific colon carcinogens.

  • Chronic WCPT administration did not alter colon mucosa cell proliferation or increase apoptosis.
  • WCPT did not affect the number or multiplicity of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) induced by azoxymethane.

  • Fecal bile acid and long-chain fatty acid levels remained unchanged.

Conclusions:

  • WCPT administration at the tested doses does not influence key parameters of colon carcinogenesis in rats.
  • These findings suggest WCPT may not possess chemopreventive properties against colon cancer in this model.
