Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Cardiology
  • Cardiac Surgery
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Infective pericarditis can lead to rare cardiac complications.
  • Lobar pneumonia is a common childhood infection that can predispose to pericarditis.

Observation:

  • A 4-year-old girl presented with infective pericarditis secondary to lobar pneumonia.
  • Echocardiography revealed a pseudoaneurysm on the left ventricle's posterolateral wall near the atrioventricular junction.

Findings:

  • Color flow Doppler imaging showed bidirectional flow through the communication hole of the pseudoaneurysm.
  • The pseudoaneurysm was surgically resected, leading to a successful outcome.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of echocardiography in diagnosing rare cardiac complications of infections in children.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Prompt surgical intervention is crucial for managing left ventricular pseudoaneurysms.
  • Understanding these complications aids in developing targeted treatment strategies for pediatric cardiovascular emergencies.
