Isolated internal iliac artery aneurysms are rare but can cause serious complications. Obliterative endoaneurysmorrhaphy offers a safe and effective repair method, resolving compressive symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Aneurysm Research

Background:

  • Iliac artery aneurysms are uncommon without abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA).
  • Isolated internal iliac (hypogastric) artery aneurysms are exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • Seven hypogastric aneurysms were identified among 572 aortic/iliac repairs (1986-1997).
  • Three of these occurred independently of AAA.
  • Diagnosis is challenging, and large aneurysms pose risks of rupture and compression.

Findings:

  • Obliterative endoaneurysmorrhaphy provides a safe and effective repair for hypogastric aneurysms.
  • This technique addresses the deep pelvic location and distal control challenges.
  • Unlike endovascular methods, it eliminates the symptomatic compressive mass.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Endoaneurysmorrhaphy is a viable treatment for rare isolated hypogastric aneurysms.
  • This surgical approach can alleviate significant patient symptomatology.
  • Further research into the management of these rare vascular conditions is warranted.
