Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Auditory Neuroscience
  • Speech Perception

Background:

  • Auditory perception is influenced by top-down processing.
  • Distinguishing target speech in multi-talker environments presents a significant challenge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To demonstrate a simple method for enhancing auditory top-down processing.
  • To investigate the effect of concurrent reading on speech intelligibility.

Main Methods:

  • Participants listened to a target speech embedded within multiple other speech streams.
  • Participants simultaneously read the text of the target speech.
  • Speech clarity was qualitatively assessed.

Main Results:

  • The target speech became significantly clearer when participants read the text concurrently.
  • This suggests a strong top-down influence from visual reading on auditory processing.

Conclusions:

  • Concurrent visual-auditory processing can effectively enhance speech intelligibility.
  • Top-down processing mechanisms play a crucial role in overcoming auditory masking.
