Background:

Empathy is crucial for effective patient care.
Assessing and improving empathy in registered nurses is an ongoing challenge.
Existing training methods may not adequately address empathy deficits.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and evaluate a human-relations-modeled staff development program.
To objectively measure the empathy levels of registered nurses in acute and chronic care settings.
To enhance the ability of nurses with low empathy to perceive and respond with greater empathy.

Main Methods:

A short-term, human-relations-modeled staff development program was implemented.
The program targeted registered nurses scoring low in empathy.

Related Experiment Videos

Empathy levels were objectively measured before and after the program.

Main Results:

All participating nurses demonstrated an extremely low baseline level of empathy.
The staff development program significantly increased the empathy levels of the nurses.
Post-program empathy levels, while improved, did not consistently reach the minimal facilitative level.

Conclusions:

The developed program shows potential for enhancing nurse empathy.
Additional and potentially longer training is necessary to achieve optimal empathy levels.
Improving nurse empathy is vital for successful patient interaction and care.
