[Modification of cortisol-induced wound healing disorder by vitamin A]

Wound healing under application of cortisol and treatment with vitamin A was investigated in experiments on rats. Cortisol worsens the wound healing significantly, whereas it is improved by vitamin A, and even becomes normal in cortisol treated animals. The authors explain this effect by an antagonistic influence of cortisol and vitamin A on inflammation and by this on the amount of collagen. This opinion is supported by increased alpha-1 and alpha-2 globulin and decreased albumin levels in serum under vitamin A treatment, as well as by strongly decreased leucocyte count under cortisol treatment.
