Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery

Context:

  • Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures.
  • Drug-resistant epilepsy poses significant challenges to patient quality of life.
  • Surgical intervention is a viable option for select epilepsy cases.

Purpose:

  • To review clinical indications for epilepsy surgery.
  • To evaluate surgical outcomes in drug-resistant epilepsy.
  • To assess the current status and future potential of epilepsy surgery in Spain.

Summary:

  • Epilepsy surgery significantly reduces seizure frequency across patient groups.
  • Temporal lobe epilepsy and lesionectomy show particularly good outcomes (67-69% seizure-free).
  • Spain could benefit 75-300 new epilepsy surgery cases annually; currently, 100-150 are operated on.

Impact:

  • Surgical treatment for epilepsy should be prioritized based on disease severity and psychosocial impact.
  • Underutilization of epilepsy surgery resources in Spain is noted.
  • Highly specialized centers with adequate resources and volume are crucial for optimal surgical outcomes.
