Exciting advances have occurred in ultrasound during recent years, reflecting improved computer and transducer technology.

This article discusses the expanding role of ultrasound in diagnostic and interventional imaging. Increased spatial and contrast resolution through better transducers and the use of technology, such as harmonic imaging and better colour and power Doppler imaging, facilitate diagnosis. Recent advances are discussed and limitations are outlined.
