Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Radiology
  • Sports Medicine

Background:

  • Discoid medial menisci are rare congenital anomalies.
  • Bilateral presentation is exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • Two cases of bilateral discoid medial menisci are presented.
  • Associated findings include tibial plateau cupping, femoral lesions, ACL anomalies, medial plica pathology, and trochlear fissures.

Findings:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed bilaterality in both cases.
  • One patient had an incomplete type meniscus with significant intra-articular pathology.
  • The second patient presented with a complete type meniscus and horizontal cleavage tears.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Bilateral discoid medial menisci require careful diagnostic evaluation, including contralateral knee imaging.
  • Associated intra-articular pathologies may complicate surgical management.
  • Short-term outcomes of arthroscopic meniscectomy for discoid menisci may be less favorable than for normal menisci.
